lottery

The word lottery is derived from the Middle Dutch word lotinge, or possibly from the French word loterie. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word probably originates from Middle Dutch loterie, which could be a calque of the Middle Dutch word lotinge. The earliest state-sponsored lotteries were held in Flanders as early as the 15th century. The first English state lottery was held in 1569, though advertisements for the lottery had been published two years earlier.

Syndicates are fun because they are sociable

Syndicate is a role-playing game set in the dystopian future of 2069. In this world, a handful of massive corporations have replaced traditional governments, and 57% of humans have expensive chips in their heads. While 57% of the population participates in a malignant consumer culture, the remaining 43% are left to survive on the streets in ruined ghettos. The game makes good use of social commentary, and it feels especially relevant given recent events.

They can be a source of conflict

There are several types of conflict, from self-related to conflict with others, to conflicts with the environment, or even with the supernatural. One of Shirley Jackson’s most famous short stories is Man vs. Society, about a young man who is trapped by tradition and who rebels against it. It is an effective story that teaches us that we can’t be bound by tradition and to let go of old ways.

They can be a source of cheating

If you have ever bought lottery tickets, you know that they are often the source of cheating. Unscrupulous retailers often shortchange unsuspecting players. They might tell them they’ve won less than the real prize, and then cash in the ticket with a smaller amount. Or, they might even offer to pay you money to cheat the system. Sadly, this happens often to unsophisticated players and the elderly. In order to prevent these kinds of scams from taking place, state lottery officials must spend resources investigating cases of fraud and policing the integrity of the games.

They can be an addictive form of gambling

Research has shown that lottery gambling is highly addictive, particularly for women, and is associated with the lowest prevalence of other forms of gambling. The proportion of patients seeking treatment for lottery gambling is also lower than the prevalence of other forms of gambling, perhaps because lotteries are less socially accepted. In some cases, lottery players may underestimate the addictive potential of lottery tickets and progress to more harmful forms of gambling before seeking treatment.

They are a big business

You might think that lotteries print money. After all, they generate over $70 billion a year, according to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. But that money does not reach the states that run the lotteries. Only $18 billion of that total goes to the states that run the lotteries, leaving only about a fourth of the money unclaimed. What happens with the rest? Several states earmark lottery proceeds for specific purposes, but officials often game the system.
